Kenya's fridge story, and the part nobody photographs
Thousands of new vaccine fridges, a push for solar, and one stubborn lesson: buying the equipment is the easy part.
Press photos love a new refrigerator being handed over. Nobody photographs the technician who drives two hours to fix one. In Kenya's vaccine cold chain, that technician is half the story.
From 2016 to today
Kenya's modernisation began in 2016 with a successful application to Gavi's Cold Chain Equipment Optimisation Platform and a World Bank loan. The result was 3,082 new refrigerators, about a fifth of them solar direct-drive.1 By 2021 the country had deployed 8,342 refrigerators under the effort, reached nearly 50 percent equipment optimisation, and reported 92 percent functionality.1 A first phase in April 2024 added 2,061 storage units, and a further 2,000 units were flagged off in May 2025.2
The old gas fridge problem
In 2016, 13 percent of facilities relied entirely on LPG-powered fridges because they had no other electricity.1 These units proved costly, short-lived and prone to freezing vaccines, which fed that 3.5 percent freeze excursion rate.1 Meanwhile, electricity access at government health facilities barely moved, from 69 to 70 percent between 2016 and 2021.1
Equipment arrives in a day. Reliability is built over years.
What a solar fridge changes on the ground
Gavi's reporting from a rural dispensary shows it well. Before it received a solar direct-drive fridge, the nurse collected vaccines from the sub-county stores ten kilometres away, and carried them back in a vaccine carrier. The new fridge runs without a battery and mostly needs its panels wiped clean.2
The lesson for every buyer
The review's central warning is blunt: Kenya now faces the challenge of maintaining what it has built, and its 490 cold chain technicians are not enough for the growing fleet.1 For a hospital, pharmacy or NGO buying today, that translates into three questions: who services it, how fast do spares arrive, and what training comes with delivery? We answer those before we recommend a model. See how in our approach.
